In Wyoming Territory, army Major Ives and his men are building a temporary camp. The civilian surveyor, Mr. Keats is making preparations for the construction of a large permanent fort. However, the future fort is being erected on Cheyenne lands, in defiance of the treaty. Adam Reed is a self employed scout with friendly ties to the Cheyenne. Upset about the construction of the new fort on their lands, the Cheyenne ask scout Reed to contact Major Ives and deliver their message of grievance to him. The symbolic message consists of a yellow tomahawk as a warning against the building of a new fort in the area. Reed delivers the warning message to Major Ives but he is not taken serious. Major Ives lectures Reed about the need of bringing civilization to the lands that otherwise would go to waste under the savages. Reed retorts that Major Ives' only duty is to escort wagon trains of settlers passing through Cheyenne territory rather than build new forts in violation of the treaty. Reed also mentions the fact that Major Ives has a bad reputation with the Cheyenne who call him 'the Butcher' because of past massacres committed against Indians. Major Ives refuses to heed Reed's warnings, calls Reed a traitor and orders him to remain in the army camp to prevent him from returning to the Cheyenne. Reed obeys but warns everyone in the camp of a major Cheyenne attack. Major Ives orders the hurried construction of a reinforced defensive compound. Also in the camp are the families of the soldiers, a Mexican scout and his Indian squaw, the fiancee of one of the officers and a gold prospector who just happened to arrive there. Major Ives' determination to stay and defy the Cheyenne is not all due to his patriotism and courage. The Major also hides a terrible personal secret.

Good Lesley Selander vintage
This western belongs to the second part of career for Lesley Selander, his best part, unlike his cheap one, during the forties. Here, with more budget, he is of course more comfortable, and without being under the lack of freedom, which is usually the bad side of a bigger budget. Producers generally remove any wish for something new, or unusual, when some directors dare something daring. Exectuves only seek the gross, and in that purpose, the key is to propose to audiences what they seek for, what they search for, and certainly not something unexpected. Such a shame. Here, with this film, and others that he made more or less in the same period, Lesley Selander makes me think of a total freedom, concerning camera angles, characters study, and above all the Indian attack over the cavalry base camp, so violent, so brutal, with shocking scenes of women slaughtered with tomahawk. Yes, this is a very effective, excellent western from a specialist. An overall atmosphere and spirit that you can't forget, especially from a grade B movie, and not a Z.
I am so happy with my DVD purchase from Rare & Collectables! It arrived packaged well in a nice slim cover with the original DVD picture on it. I will be ordering again!!! Thanku
Item received was not 'starring Helen Hayes' despite her picture being on the DVD, it was actually the version with Joan Hickson. I raised a complaint one week ago but still heard nothing in reply. Very poor customer service.
Easy way to get to see an old magnificant movie with superstars. Delivered within 48 hours, downloaded in good quality few minutes with soundtrack in three languages.
i purchased this from you several months ago. Unfortunately I never saved it . i owned the dvd that i purchased about 20 years ago.and when my computer crashed lost it a second time. Anyone who buys a movie three times likes it. What you sold me is near DVD quality. Your competition sells it for three times what you charged because once again it's out of print. To boot when the charge three times the price the qualitty is poor. I OWN 10,000videos that took 40 years to acquire making purchases all over the world. I say this to emphasize that you are the only quality shop doing what you do so customers can have confidence when they buy from you. The only problem dealing with you is your supply is limited otherwise I would be our best customer. For the record this is a fact based story with fictionalized characters.
