Wealthy Cecil Fox, locally known as a major patron of Venice, has placed a worldwide advertisement for a personal secretary. Of the many qualified applicants, one of the few he calls in and who he ultimately hires is highly unqualified struggling Hollywood actor William McFly, who is well aware that based on the salary listed that Fox does not really want a personal secretary but a person for a totally different job description. That job, as Fox describes to him in simple terms, is to be the stage manager of a play to take place in his palazzo, Fox, McFly himself, and three unwitting others to be the actors in what those unwitting three will believe to be real life, as such McFly will have to use his acting skills to improvise based on what the three others do. In the guise that he is on his deathbed, Fox has called back into his life three former lovers, each who believes that Fox is going to bequeath his entire vast estate to her, only to find that each is in competition with the other two unknown to them before their arrival. Despite none of the three really needing the money, each woman does arrive as requested and seemingly wants the money. The three are: Texas matron Lone Star Sheridan née Crockett, French Princess Dominique, and fading Hollywood actress Merle McGill. Added to the mix is Mrs. Sheridan's personal registered nurse, proper Brit Sarah Watkins, who, in addition to monitoring Mrs. Sheridan's intake of barbiturate sleeping pills, is more the "maintainer" of her high maintenance employer. As each of the four women works toward her own personal ends in this situation, McFly tries to figure out Fox's endgame, which he knows is more than playing a joke on his former lovers, and which he may be able to use for his own benefit if he does figure it out.

Classy and original comedy mystery

The Honey Pot is a delightful comedy mystery that seems destined to be under-appreciated. On the surface, an updating of Ben Jonson's Volpone, the plot twists in unexpected directions, confounding the viewer until the very end. While the mystery itself takes some time to get started, I found the film thoroughly entertaining due in great part to the witty dialogue of masterful Jospeh L. Mankiewicz and the colorful characterizations delivered by a wonderful cast led by Rex Harrison, Cliff Robertson and Maggie Smith. The dialogue also reaches some interesting depths towards the end of the film when Harrison's character makes some thoughtful reflections about time. As others have pointed out, the plot involves a lot of talking and takes its time to unfold, but this is part of the charm of the story. It is perhaps less about the mystery itself than the amusing interactions among a set of opportunistic and sly characters plotting against each-other. Performances are all around superb. Rex Harrison is exquisite as the cunning and charming orchestrator of the intrigue. Cliff Robertston is flawless as the quick-witted McFly/Mosca, executing his master's plan with intelligence and humorous servility. Just as delightful are Maggie Smith as the not-so-innocent nurse bringing a moral conscience to the story, Susan Hayward as a brash and aging American millionairess and Edie Adams as a rather crude Monroesque movie star. Perhaps a little too slow and not exciting enough for most audiences, The Honey Pot is neverthess worth the time of those interested in sophisticated and humourous dialogue, unusually creative mystery, and engaging performances.

Item received was not as described

Item received was not 'starring Helen Hayes' despite her picture being on the DVD, it was actually the version with Joan Hickson. I raised a complaint one week ago but still heard nothing in reply. Very poor customer service.

Fantastic, thank you so much

i purchased this from you several months ago

i purchased this from you several months ago. Unfortunately I never saved it . i owned the dvd that i purchased about 20 years ago.and when my computer crashed lost it a second time. Anyone who buys a movie three times likes it. What you sold me is near DVD quality. Your competition sells it for three times what you charged because once again it's out of print. To boot when the charge three times the price the qualitty is poor. I OWN 10,000videos that took 40 years to acquire making purchases all over the world. I say this to emphasize that you are the only quality shop doing what you do so customers can have confidence when they buy from you. The only problem dealing with you is your supply is limited otherwise I would be our best customer. For the record this is a fact based story with fictionalized characters.
