Storyline

The Carpetbaggers  George Peppard plays a hard-driven industrialist more than a little reminiscent of Howard Hughes. While he builds airplanes, directs movies and breaks hearts, his friends and lovers try to reach his human side, and find that it’s an uphill battle. The film’s title is a metaphor for self-promoting tycoons who perform quick financial takeovers, impose dictatorial controls for short-term profits, then move on to greener pastures.

My all time favorite movie

I understand it was Andy Warhal’s as well. This is the Hollywood Trash/Dream Factory at its best. I fell in love with Carrol Baker and her one liners, George Peppard played a role we all would love to play in our lives but would NEVER admit it. Oh that look he gave her by the roulette table when he decided to cast her as the lead for his movie and that smirk…does not come any better then that. It is a colorful gorgeous melodrama that is pure entertainment a la Imitation of Life or Madame X. Again my favorite movie ever. I was shocked to find out George P was already 36 by then. A very sexy man in a very sexy fun movie. Now that i found out Jeannie Dention was supposed to be Joan Crawford i was laghing out loud with delight.

Fictionalized maybe, but very recognizable.

The Carpetbaggers This has got to be one of the finest fictionalized biographies ever presented. Obviously names and places may change, but the image of Howard Hughes shines through in the presentation of Jonas Cord, and the other characters included, or created for the development of this character. Obviously this speaks well of the writing of Harold Robbins, but it took the talents of George Peppard & co. to breathe into it the vibrant life that jumps off the screen into the consciousness of the viewer.

Definitely not a movie to be missed by anyone who is a fan of Harold Robbins!
