In 1865, the cadets of a Russian Naval Academy ship have shore leave in Morocco; among them is (fictionalized) future composer ‘Nicky’ Rimsky-Korsakov. In search of a piano, Nicky and singing ship’s doctor Klin meet a family of once-wealthy Spanish colonists…and their daughter Cara who secretly dances in a cabaret. Romantic complications ensue, but Nicky seems less interested in Cara’s favors than in inspirations for his future masterpieces.

A film that is more fun than one would expect

Song Of Scheherazade, I am glad to see that at least a few other people know and remember this film.It’s always been hard to find,and I doubt that it will ever come out on DVD. I became acquainted with it in the early 60’s when it would crop up time to time on the Four O’Clock Movies,which my friends and I used to watch after school.It took me years to find out the title,and years more to find the actual film.It’s wonderful Hollywood Technocolor Hokum,and always fun to see.Aumont plays Rimsky-Korsakov with great warmth(seemingly in great contradiction to any portraits I have ever seen of the composer.)The music is exotic and wonderful of course,as Rimsky-Korsakov was a master of lush orchestration and beautiful Romantic themes.But the real gem is Eve Arden’s droll performance which lifts the film above the ordinary.Inspired silliness,and the addition of the spectacular Russian concert finale is nice.

Lovely Classic

We loved this film specifically for the amazing musical score. Jean-Pierre Aumont (RIP) is the handsome-but-nerdy Russian composer, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, whose wing man is the illustrious tenor Charles Kullmann (RIP) from the Metropolitan Opera – – WOW. Yvonne De Carlo also gives a very lovely performance.

The story line is a little too drawn out, but well balanced as a while, with quite a few amusing and touching parts. The costumes, sets and choreography are remarkable, as only the films of that era could be.

Item received was not 'starring Helen Hayes' despite her picture being on the DVD, it was actually the version with Joan Hickson. I raised a complaint one week ago but still heard nothing in reply. Very poor customer service.

i purchased this from you several months ago. Unfortunately I never saved it . i owned the dvd that i purchased about 20 years ago.and when my computer crashed lost it a second time. Anyone who buys a movie three times likes it. What you sold me is near DVD quality. Your competition sells it for three times what you charged because once again it's out of print. To boot when the charge three times the price the qualitty is poor. I OWN 10,000videos that took 40 years to acquire making purchases all over the world. I say this to emphasize that you are the only quality shop doing what you do so customers can have confidence when they buy from you. The only problem dealing with you is your supply is limited otherwise I would be our best customer. For the record this is a fact based story with fictionalized characters.
