It's the mid-nineteenth century in Glasgow. The upper class Smith family has just purchased the house at 7 Blythswood Square, of which the eldest of three daughters Madeleine Smith approves, as while she is being courted by William Minnoch, the man of choice by her stern and critical father, family patriarch James Smith, her basement bedroom provides easy access to the servants' basement entrance and allows her clandestine rendezvous with poor Frenchman Émile L'Angelier, the man she truly loves. In the progression of these relationships, everyone becomes frustrated: Madeleine's parents and patient William for no official announcement of an engagement, and Émile, as, although he and Madeleine are instead the ones engaged albeit secretly, she is hesitant to tell her parents about him, which relegates him to sneaking around that basement entrance like a common thief. Things for Madeleine change when she comes to the realization that Émile wants to marry her solely to raise his social and by association financial standing. As such, she accepts William's proposal of marriage while tries to break off all ties with Émile, which includes asking him to return her love letters as if they came to light would place her in a difficult position especially with her father. But when Émile dies all of a sudden, it determined by arsenic poisoning, Madeleine, upon discovery of her and Émile's relationship, becomes suspect number one as being his murderer.

Excellent Movie
Inexplicably, there are some reviews of this film that are less than enthusiastic. However, if you are a real movie watcher, an appreciator of good old movies, you will find this an excellent, engrossing, well made film. A young, wealthy beautiful girl gets involved with a poor handsome caddish Frenchman. She has a very strict Victorian father who shapes her character in many ways. The attention to details in the film by the Director are excellent, especially the dancing scene that flashes to the villagers dancing- films are not made like this anymore. The Director, David Lean, was married to the lead actress in the film, Ann Todd, and you can tell that this film was made with great care. Some people say that Ann's performance was cold, yet I feel she was true to character, and that she portrayed her personality due to youth and upbringing very well. The costuming is also so stunning that it too adds to the film. As far as I am concerned this film is right up there, near to the level of the Heiress and other great films.
Milestone film from John Ford...One of his earliest talkies as well as the film debuts of Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart..get a copy just for that !
This is a classic and perculuiar Aussie story, it is a shame that all the leading stars were imports rather than some local talents. And, to add insult to injury changing the name of the movie to suit the USA audience is a fundamentally disgusting
The downloads for the 70's Boney TV series are as described, not great quality but perfectly adequate given they are so old. So thanks for that. It is good to know there is an archive of old series.
I had to go back and ask for some to be redelivered, as some were duplicates and some were missing. But eventually I got the set.
Absolutely perfect. Got to the U.S. quicker than I expected, in perfect condition, and exactly what I hoped for.

Like many on this site, a long standing favourite of mine. I opted for the download link option, and I was impressed how quickly I received it. Unlike the post, no long delay and no increased expensive postal charges. Perfect quality every time, and I've bought several. Also excellent communication with the site owner/s. A brilliant site indeed.
