At four in the morning, against the backdrop of a foggy River Thames, two parallel stories of two couples in crisis unfold. As the police find the body of an unidentified young woman, and the city is still fast asleep, two insecure lovers entwine, frolicking on the sand. Eager for affection and contact, yet afraid of the implications of involvement, the woman begins to have second thoughts, and suddenly, they realise that there's nothing left to say but goodbye. But, why does parting hurt so much? At the same time, with her marriage on the verge of a breakdown, an inexperienced, exasperated young mother tries her best to cope with her teething baby. Then, her young husband, reeking of whiskey and cigar, returns home; however, his arrival comes as an unpleasant and unwelcome surprise. Once, they were a happy couple. Now, the husband and wife are drifting apart. What went wrong in their marriage?

Three drama's in one.
I first saw this film back in the early 1970s. Apart from the two incidents affecting Elizabeth Ann Lynn and Judy Dench which shows how dramatically how different incidents in their lives can and do bring all different types of people, rich or poor, young and old to bring, themselves to commit suicide, it also shows when a person does commit suicide, just how impersonal the process becomes when others whose job it is retrieving and processing the body.

You do feel sorry for these people, but once you have taken the body to be certified life is extinct and taken to a mortuary and do all the paper work etc, it is time to do another job.
