The setting is the Civil War and its aftermath. Belle's family has lost their land to Yankees. She marries Confederate guerilla leader Sam Starr and they continue activities against exploiters until she is shot riding to alert Sam to a trap. Highly romanticized and little connection with history.

Belle Starr filled with stars
When describing Belle Starr at the beginning and ending of this film the question is asked "What's a legend?" The lady playing Belle Starr is the legendary Gene Tierney. Like Belle Starr, Tierney "will never die, because she is a legend." Randolph Scott plays it exceptionally well as her Confederate guerrilla leader husband Sam Starr. The 'star' power continues with Dana Andrews (Major Thomas Crail) who is hunting down Scott but still in love with Belle. Scott couldn't have a better man riding shotgun than Chill Wills as Blue Duck. Of all the great roles here, my favorite was Louise Beavers as Mammy Lou. Beaver's success as a great character actress opened the door for other African-American actors. Other wonderful performances were by Shepperd Strudwick (Ed Shirley) and a true southern belle Elizabeth 'Patty' Patterson (Sarah). In closing, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the review of vitaleralphlouis.
