Nine Men
Clint Eastwood's first starring role in Hollywood showed that his new-found star status courtesy of the Dollars trilogy was no mere fluke with a powerful performance in this tense, well-mounted production surrounding him with an incredible array both of old-timers like Bob Steele and new boys like Bruce Dern; with a far less flippant and callous treatment of violent death than Leone ever bothered with.

First seen cradling a calf, Eastward's rapid transformation from gentle soul to avenging angel is fearsome to behold (on the rare occasions he smiles it's a transformation) and provided conclusive evidence that a dynamic new talent had arrived on the scene.

Director Ted Post had already made several episodes of 'Rawhide' with Eastwood who personally selected him for the assignment with results that obviously satisfied him since five years later he entrusted him with the first 'Dirty Harry' sequel 'Magnum Force'.

It also provides a unique opportunity to see Clint sharing the screen with both Ed Begley and the lovely but ill-fated Inger Stevens.
