One of Siodmak's best films
I hauled this out from my collection of films, not only because it has Christmas in its title, but because it is one of Robert Siodmak's best films. Excellent with Film Noir he manages the impossible, turning Deanna Durban into an ' available ' young woman in brothel like surroundings, and the opening scenes with her in it show her to be the great mature actor she could have been. She sings without any hope in her face or voice ' Spring will be just a little late this Year ' and I can think of no other female actor of the time who could have done it better. The story and no spoilers moves into very Noir territory concerning her hopeless love for a very nasty character played by Gene Kelly and sadly, in my opinion he was not right for the role, but then I do not rate him that highly in any of his roles. Dean Harens an unused actor who dominates a disillusioned role as a jilted young lover in the first part of the film would in my opinion have been perfect as the main lead alongside Durbin, but the fates and Hollywood's whims decided otherwise. A heart breaking film that probably should have had another title as it is certainly anything but festive, but so good many viewers will want to return to it as I do. And perhaps wish along with me that Durbin had stayed on and be remembered for further roles equal to this. See it if you can.
