Frederick Egerman (Len Cariou) is very happy in his marriage to a seventeen-year-old virgin, Anne (Lesley-Anne Down). Only she's been a virgin for the whole eleven months of the marriage, and being a bit restless, Fredrick goes to see an old flame, the famous actress Desiree Armfeldt (Dame Elizabeth Taylor). Desiree is getting tired of her life, and is thinking of settling down, and sets her sights on Fredrick, despite his marriage, and her own married lover Count Carl-Magnus Mittelheim (Laurence Guittard). She gets her mother to invite the Egermans to her country estate for the weekend. But when Carl-Magnus and his wife Charlotte (Dame Diana Rigg) appear, too, things begin to get farcical (Send in the Clowns), and the night must smile for the third time before all the lovers are united.

La Liz is La Grand
For La Liz fans this film is a jewel because probably for the first time in her long career she actually sings - the song of course - Send in the Clowns - was written for a non-singer like Taylor so she was perfect for it - but what she achieves when she sings that great song is a drama and passion that hits one very hard right to the heart - La Liz is great because she has always been great - she's a natural - one of those talents who surpasses the ordinary and no matter what she does she brings us to another place we can only imagine. Elizabeth Taylor was the greatest of all stars because from the very beginning she had something no one else had - a unique quality so sublime, so rare, and so enchanting that when she's on the screen you just don't see anyone or anything else.

A good try but Rigg is the reason to see this!
I found this at my lending library. I've always wanted to see it being a fan of the three leading actresses and the songs from the play.
While Elizabeth Taylor really tries with her role she doesn't quite get there and any scenes with Diana Rigg she may as well not try because Rigg steals the entire show as the strong willed Charlotte.
Lesley Anne Down is a good choice and while she was dubbed she still gives it her all. Her rendition of Everyday A Little Death with Rigg is superb and i rewind that scene many times.
The male cast members are pathetic and you can tell they are from the stage because they act dreadfully.
See this if you are a fan of the actresses, especially Diana Rigg. Pity it flopped this could of really done something for her film career!
