In 1921 Dublin, the I.R.A. battles the “Black & Tans”, special British forces given to harsh measures. Irish-American medical student Kerry O’Shea (Don Murray) hopes to stay aloof, but saving a wounded friend gets him outlawed, and inexorably drawn into the rebel organization under his former professor Dr. Sean Lenihan (James Cagney), who has “shaken hands with the devil” and begun to think of fighting as an end in itself. Complications arise when Kerry falls for a beautiful English hostage, and the British offer a peace treaty that is not enough to satisfy Lenihan.

simply superb

This is without question a superbly well-made film on "The Troubles", back at a time when the IRA was in full bloom. As has been noted here, everything works well - the excellent cinematography (with beautiful vistas of the Irish countryside), a superb cast, great direction, and a richly textured script. All the characters are well drawn and fleshed out. Cagney's work here as the fanatic physician/seditionist is among his best screen portrayals. One suspects at first that the film is going to be an outright paean to the IRA, but as the film progresses, the murderous and fanatic side of their work is made clear, and we are left with a complex and ambiguous picture. My one quibble is with the casting of the uber-English Michael Redgrave as an IRA chief; he doesn't even attempt a brogue. However, I cannot recommend this film highly enough; it is simply not to be missed.

Powerful imagery, excellent direction--a great action film

The powerful imagery extends to characters as well as extraordinary cinematography. A fine cast turns in great performances all around. Beautiful b&w photography appears to be born of a long and co-operative association between director Michael Anderson and cinematographer Erwin Hillier. There is ample evidence of a director at work with a firm sense of purpose and the creative ability to pull it off. Unusual for its time in this respect. This film confirms what I've heard today's filmmakers (Scorcese and Spielberg) are saying--the work of Michael Anderson deserves much greater recognition.

Item received was not as described

Item received was not 'starring Helen Hayes' despite her picture being on the DVD, it was actually the version with Joan Hickson. I raised a complaint one week ago but still heard nothing in reply. Very poor customer service.

i purchased this from you several months ago. Unfortunately I never saved it . i owned the dvd that i purchased about 20 years ago.and when my computer crashed lost it a second time. Anyone who buys a movie three times likes it. What you sold me is near DVD quality. Your competition sells it for three times what you charged because once again it's out of print. To boot when the charge three times the price the qualitty is poor. I OWN 10,000videos that took 40 years to acquire making purchases all over the world. I say this to emphasize that you are the only quality shop doing what you do so customers can have confidence when they buy from you. The only problem dealing with you is your supply is limited otherwise I would be our best customer. For the record this is a fact based story with fictionalized characters.
