Gone are the days when DVDs are manufactured using the traditional pressed method. The reason for this is the large number of discs that have to be produced per title. This was feasible when DVD libraries where in existence and before streaming killed them. Streaming dramatically cut the demand for DVD's and the plants that produced pressed DVDs have all but vanished. New releases are still produced by pressing but they never get a second pressing.

A new method of producing DVD's had to be found and this is called MOD or Manufactured to Demand. What this means is that the Digital file is burnt onto a DVD-R, Because any number can be produced, say from 1 to 10, it means there is no stock holding and costs are drastically produced.

All of the Hollywood Studio's, and both major and minor DVD distributors now release their back catalogue DVDs using MOD. All industries move to new techniques when it becomes necessary. DVD production and distribution is no different.

A major critique of DVD-R is that they are inferior or they are pirated. Nothing could be further from the truth. A DVD-R will last as long as a pressed disc if stored correctly. I just refer you to Warner Archive Series (all back catalogue titles) with over 10,000 films all released on DVD-R. Would you accuse Warner Brothers of piracy?
