Pure Burlesque on Africa
The review that you are reading is based on the blu - ray disk that I just received as a result of donating to it's restoration months back .This restored version won't be out until 7/30/20/. I am writing this on the 7th of June. Although Bob Furmanek and the 3D archive normally restores 3D films, he is also an archivist for the Abbot and Costello film estate. Although years ago he had fixed it for video disk,by now it was in bad shape.Through Kick Starters he raise up the funds. I made a stronger contribution it resulting not only my name on the end Blu ray credits as the contributor ,but, a copy too. This movie is a whole Burlesque satire on Africa and Safari's by Abbot and Costello as book sale man in a department store being duped by Hillary Brooks to help her create a map ,from Costello memory of the book that ,that was out of print and promising to pay good ,until Abbott learns of the plan ,at her house. Two of the later stooges costar in this film Shemp Howard, African explorer, now retired and with Astigmatism Joe Besser as the butler. There a funny scene where Costello take a piece of water pipe with him to Hillary's house and Besser get his finger stuck in it.Pure Shtick! You then have Jeffro Boudine's,Max Bear jr of Beverly Hillbillies fame , father and uncle,Max Bear Sr and Buddy Bear, as the thugs who work for Hillary ,who is being asked to gets rid of two once they find the diamonds. Two real animal trainers and explorers show up in this film .Clyde Beatty, of the Clyde Beatty circus fame, and Frank Buck as part of the safari. You see Clyde demonstrate his skills on lions as Costello is hiding under a bamboo box after Abbot thought he was eaten by lion.Lou has a real slapstick with a friendly gorilla played by Burt Wendland and gets chased by a hungry crocodile.Peed off African tribes trick Abbot into thinking he found diamonds to entrap Lou cause their king has a sweet tooth for the fat guy, played by Martin Wilkins.I think the ape was played by Charles Gemora.Bo Bo might have been something else.Originally there was plans to shoot it in two color Cinecolor, but the two boys changed their minds. My guess was that at the expense of the process the color and it was not accurate, might as well shoot it in black n white. They shot it at the Nassour studios, where other Cinecolor feature would be produced after this ,El Paso. The ending is real funny Surprise. What make this special on Blu - ray and DVD is that it contain the original masters of Abbot and Costello radio show in which Bela Lugosi is a guest star after Abbot and Costello were finishing their last film for Universal before becoming independent.Very prefect crisp sound .Costello insults Abbots wife who is in the skit.Lou make a joke about Lana Turner being married so many times .Then ,the original edited disk version. This version has a little surface noise being that the other master have not been touched for years any how. Then the creme de la creme .This special edition includes the Abbot and Costello digital restored 3D comics. If you don't have a 3D set up don't worry this also includes an anaglyph version and a one pair of 3D glasses version too so everybody can see it .It also includes another trailer of an independent Abbot and Costello film and the two Cine color features that were produced at the Nassour studios, El Paso and Jack in the Beanstalk. Before I ever got this I have never saw this film at all on t.v. ,never .It is one of the funniest of the Abbot and Costello vehicles.Worth it. 07/720
